Self-Catering near Blickling Hall

If you’re planning on visiting Blickling Hall, one of Norfolk’s finest National Trust properties, Boundary Stables offers beautifully furnished, self-catering cottages only a short drive away. (Boundary Stables has free WIFI so you can check the National Trusts’ website before you visit for information on tours and special events.)

Blickling Hall, originally built in the 15th century, was once home to the Boleyn family. The Hall you see today was built in 1616 and designed by architect Robert Lyminge. There is plenty of history to delve into here, not only inside the hall but in its gardens and the wider estate. In the 20th Century, during World War Two RAF Officers were housed at Blickling – It is believed that some of the graffiti carvings in the beech trees by the lake date back to the 1940’s!

There is plenty to do on the 4,777 acre Estate and you could easily spend several days exploring. There are many way-marked tracks for walking and cycling along and you can fish on the lake. Dogs are allowed, so long as they are kept on leads as livestock graze in some areas of the estate. There’s a lovely walk that loops round Blickling’s lake, past the perimeter of the gardens and begins and ends at the front of the hall.

The Great Wood is an area of ancient woodland, home to a beautiful display of bluebells during spring. You can follow several trails in and around the Great Wood, where you are likely to see plenty of wildlife. On the edge of the Great Wood is the unusual, large pyramid shaped Mausoleum, built in memory of John Hobart, Earl of Buckingham in 1793.

A short bike ride or walk from Boundary Stables, is Happisburgh’s coastline where you can witness dramatic cliff-top sea-views, and Happisburgh lighthouse against the dusk sky.

There are plenty of beaches to choose from close by. Sea Palling is a dune-lined, ‘Blue Flag’ award winning, sandy beach ideal for spending relaxing evenings on. The wide bays, created by artificial-reef sea defences, make stunning views of the sea against the horizon. You can find secluded spots away from the lifeguard hut, where dogs are welcome too.

You can see the sea from the roadside at Walcott making it ideal for a quick evening seaside walk. If your just passing by or the weather isn’t at its best you can watch the waves from your car too. The popular Kingfisher Fish Bar is a good place to buy fish and chips, to eat in or take away!

One of the best places to experience a Norfolk sunset is Cromer pier, a great view surrounded by the sea and maritime heritage. This iconic structure was built in 1901 and has remained a local landmark. BACTON WOOD – Wonderful woodland walks and cycle trails near Boundary Stables

Only six miles away from Boundary Stables lies Bacton Wood near the little village of Witton (Locally known as Witton Wood, it’s around 2.5 miles from Bacton itself.)

Bacton Wood is a hidden gem and one of my favourite woodlands in Norfolk. Forestry Commission owned, these 280 acres of woodland are well worth a visit!

Pockets of Ancient woodland and two 200-year-old sessile oaks still remain alongside stretches of pine, beech, birch, wellingtonia and many other species. The vast variety of habitats mean there’s a good chance of seeing plenty of wildlife. Roe, red and muntjac deer are a common sight here along with green and lesser-spotted woodpeckers, tree creepers, sparrow-hawks, blue and great tits to name a few, so bring along some binoculars. At dusk you are likely to see and hear tawny owls and also bats during spring and summer time.

There are several marked trails to follow, ranging from the 1.3 mile ‘Red Trail,’ the 2 mile ‘Blue Trail’ and the 2.5 mile ‘Yellow Trail.’ Or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, there are plenty of windy footpaths off the beaten track making it a great place to walk your dogs and explore. The woodland paths are un-surfaced dirt tracks and may be unsuitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs, especially in wet conditions.

Bacton Wood is also a popular with cyclists for leisurely bike rides on flatter wider tracks (the Red Trail,) or the varied terrain and elevations of smaller tracks are ideal for mountain bikes. During your stay, Boundary Stables have bikes and trailers available to hire – why not take one for a spin?

If it’s a lovely day for a picnic there are picnic-benches in the main car park north of the wood and several benches along the marked Red Trail. There are no facilities at Bacton Wood; the nearest public toilets are at Walcott along the seafront. The Car Park is free of charge and open dawn till dusk, so stay as little or as long as you like!

How to get there –

Postcode – NR28 9UE. Bacton Wood is signposted on Old Hall Road, Witton. The entrance to the main car park is at the Edingthorpe crossroads. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Bacton+Woods+Car+Park/@52.8274712,1.4386085,17z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x47d75051343545f7:0xed1eb368bcbd3b6c
